Repaying Student Loans
Tuesday, July 7th, 2009Repaying student loans can be hard. There are a few things you should know when you are ready to repay your student loans. After you finish school you should have a grace period before repaying most student loans. By finishing school I mean dropping out, graduating, or even dropping below half time. You must know that even if you do not graduate you are still obligated to repaying student loans.
You do have a few options when you are ready to start repaying student loans. If you do not have a job after you finish school and you cannot repay your student loans right away you may be eligible for student loan deferment. This means giving you a little extra time to get a job before you have to start your payments. If you find that your student loan payments are much higher than you thought they would be you can have them consolidated. This is placing all of your loans into one loan and possibly having a lower monthly payment and longer time to pay the loans off.
If you choose to re-enter school then your current student loan payments may be put on hold until you finish school again. Of course you will be paying back more student loans then. You should also check with your lender or your financial advisor about interest rates going up while you are in school for another term.
Keep in mind that your grace period that you get for your federal student loans can be anywhere from six months to nine months before your first payment is expected.
You will receive information about repaying your student loans like when payment is expected and how much you will have to pay. Make sure your payments and interest rates are reasonable for your income. You can always ask around for different quotes through different lenders. If you choose to consolidate your loans you can also get different quotes by asking around.
